Six months
« on: September 30, 2018, 07:40:00 am »
I read that experts say you should have enough savings to cover six to eight months of expenses. I also read that more than half of Americans have 1k or less in a savings account. As soon as I get past 1k, something happens and there it goes. This time it was the battery and alternator on my Jeep. I check on my 401k and IRA and nope, nothing happening there either. Ugh. Why didn't I marry for money!?  :silly:

(Just kidding. I love my husband. Even if we end up under a bridge.)

Do you have enough saved for 6 months of expenses?

Saving is very difficult and holding on to what you have saved is more difficult. We have been fortunate enough to be able to have  six months of expenses in savings.

we have a year, and sometimes it is hard not to touch it. But we don't  always figure  a way so we won't.  Even if that means not getting to go a vacation we want.

Well these financial experts are delirious. They are all rich and have no concept of the real world. Most people are making closer to min wage and working less than a full time job. Or are on sites like this wasting time trying to get a few pennies a day in hopes of cashing out to get an extra $25  a month.

If you are able to save up $1000 extra then you are doing pretty good.

I have read several times you should have 3 months worth of salary saved or 3 months worth of money equal to your payments saved in case something happens and you are out of work.  Most people cannot achieve that. Because most people are basically living pay check to pay check and if the paychecks quit coming they are screwed.

I have enough for 6 months of expenses, but only because my husband inherited money from his parents.

We have 529 for the kids' college & they have literally gone up 50% since Trump has been in office & the stock market has gone up so dramatically.  Hopefully it will stay that high when I need to start using the money for their school.

We also both have 401Ks & they have gone up significantly as well in the past 2 years.

It is hard to save though if you are just trying to make ends meet month to month, especially with kids. I don't know how kids growing up now days will ever be able to afford homes or even rent with out significant help from their parents/families.  At least not here in California, our property taxes just went up another 10%... crazy times.

Can't say I do.  Something always comes up or breaks down where every time I seem to get ahead in my saving, I fall behind.

No, I don't. They don't pay enough for us to have extra money. All I do is pay the bills every month, broke until payday, and starts all over again the next month. This is not the plan Almighty God have for us. spirit of 'not enough' go into the pit!
