Joey Chestnut prepares for the competition as much as most golfers, curlers, racquet ball players, bowlers and race car drivers which are all considered sports to some people so I would say that it is an athletic competition. And his hot dogs were all-beef Nathans so the people with allergies would have been fine. I ate eleven jumbo size, Chicago style hot dogs a few years ago in a small contest, did not get sick, except for a huge headache from all of the MSG. My hot dogs were the cheapo deluxe. I felt like throwing up but felt that it would have been cheating (I came in first). I did not hear how much he made or if he had sponsors. My thought is that if he is doing it for the money, good for him.  The majority of people work doing things that they hate-he seemed happy.

Here is a fun one, try eating 3 normal size Pretzels in 60 seconds, sounds easy !!  They have to be normal size not mini ..... no water or stuff to wash it down on this one.

It's crazy.  I can't even eat seven things in 10 minutes.  People like doing different things and as long as there is an audience it will make the news.

I can't even imagine it.... never watched.... watching similar TV shows with people stuffing themselves... but 72 hot dogs in 10 min? NO time to chew.. no time to do anything else than being disgusting.... and breaking a record obviously... for what? Money and little fame? I guess it's worth it...
For me food is sacred and I wouldn't be able to eat that fast or that much...
Too be honest I LOVE hot dogs, but get disgusted after my 2nd or 3rd... Can't even think of... seventy-two???  LMAO.... oh my...

I went to this last year and to see this guy eat these in person is an awesome sight.he also does the wing contests
