Need Help With an Avatar

I want to apologize if this has been posted, I tried to do a forum search but couldn't find an answer. I'm noting that some here have both an image of themselves (avatar, I presume) and a banner. I followed the instructions for the banner but when I select update, my avatar is gone. If I select an Avatar, my banner section is removed. Is this normal? Or am I doing something wrong? Thanks for your support.

Don't select save changes. That'll remove your banner. Just pick the color and avatar you want  and close it out. It'll automatically change but pushing save changes deletes them for some reason
