I learn a new word from time to time doing the jumble puzzles every day
Increasing vocabulary and using those words is a challenge.
My fifth grade teacher would give us 5 words every day. [some memories stay with you forever]
they were uncommon words.

I increase my vocabulary by playing Words With Friends every day and looking up words that come up that I don't know in the online dictionary that is attached to that game. It is very enlightening.

I remember once on Reba - Barbara Jean was talking and said some big word and Van asked her what it meant and she said "I don't know.  I just memorize big words and use them.  I don't know what they mean".  lol

I think just read has helped my vocabulary. Although while I was in high school, I prepped for college entrance exams by going over what I termed "SAT" words. There was actually a prep guide titled Up Your Score that was written by college students that did well in their SAT's that had some of the best definitions / sentences so that you wouldn't forget the definition. For example:

Abominate: To detest, hate, or loathe something
I abominated Nate so much that I put a bomb in Nate's boxer shorts.

Another way to learn a new word every day is to do the crossword puzzles.
