It looks like I will be spending a day in Washington DC. Does anyone have any recommendations for things we must do?

Washington DC is a huge place.  If you are spending one day there then it depends on what part of the city you will be in and why you are going to be there.

Plenty of free museums or concerts...especially in summer ...

It's a great place to visit.  It's been a long time since we were there but we enjoyed it all.  Zoo is great.  Arlington Cemetery  is inspiring and emotional.    The museums alone take more than a day.  I hope you enjoy whatever you decide to visit.  Have fun.

If you're only going to spend a day, I'd suggest just walking along the mall (the area where the reflecting pool is, and many of the monuments and museums surround it) and perhaps visiting some of the monuments and other government buildings. Unfortunately, I don't think you'll have enough time for any of the museums unless visiting one museum is all you plan to do. But whatever you do, I know you'll have fun. There is just way too much to see and visit in only a day.

I live outside of Washington, DC.  You have to see the Martin Luther King memorial.  Have a terrific time!

Smithsonian.  The museum is huge, housed in several buildings and has something for everyone.  ;D
