Does your Social Security cover all your expenses?
« on: September 05, 2014, 10:38:34 am »
Between my husband's and mine we are short every month about $350. My husband was working but they have a $15,000 limit so in short we don't have enough to last out the year. So medical bills, medicine and food will not be able to be paid for.  Do you think that is fair?

My social security would not cover all the expenses.  Thank God I have a pension, so between the two it's easy, but not as easy as when I was working.

We worked darn hard and paid in every month and don't get a lot back. It just erks the heck out of me  for these welfare queens go in and just buy almost what they want and all their meds are paid. I believe they should be drawing the min. wage and not for each child. Live like the folks who are working and drawing min wage. I do not believe we owe them a free ride.. Yes I know there are lot who deserve it. But the majority can get a job.

From what I have heard most people are in a bad situation if they are counting on social security alone.  As for me, it doesn't look like that money will even be there by the time I get to be that age so I won't be counting on it at all.

We barely made it on our social security each month prior to my husband's passing.  I had to let our house go after he passed because my social security would barely cover the payment much less electricity, food, etc.  Because my social security was a few $ more than his - his just got absorbed by the social security administration.  So he worked and paid in all those years but it now belongs to them.

I have been hearing that story since I was in High School and it's been showing up in my bank every month for fifteen years now. It never was supposed to support you, but it sure makes it a lot easier.

Not even near.  But part of problem is mine.  I only worked 16 years out of my worklife and then a health condition interfered.  I had to file for SS when I was going to work and save another two years.  Remember, SS goes back 35 years looking for any type of work credits, so even working part-time will get you some credit.  (And I thought I would be married and relied to heavily on that thought.)

I don't understand that either . Welfare recipients get everything paid for

I've heard too many times, SS wasn't suppose to support you, just help supplement your income.  I think it should support you.  If you work more than 30 years on a job, it should support you.  But alas for most people it doesn't even come close to even helping you and in some states the greedy government wants to tax the small amount you do receive.

Some months Social Security does cover all my expenses and others it doesn't even come close. Luckily I saved a lot for retirement when I was working, so I have the funds outside of Social Security to get by. But I can't do everything I want to in retirement like travel to fabulous places and eat at expensive restaurants or buy a new car whenever I want to.

:o I'm headed that way, and it does not sound like fun. 8) Why do they always have money to spend on other companies and not at home where it is desperately need? Has anyone figured that one out?
