Contests and Promotions

On the contest and promotions how do you know what information you need to find to get the right answer.  Another words what do you do? Just guess and hope you got it right? or do you research it?  I personally guess when it comes to sports but I do a little research on the non sport contest if I don't already know the answer.  What are your ways of completing these contests?
