Eight Month old baby in critical condition
« on: March 09, 2014, 06:41:50 am »
I have a friend who has been affected by a family member who's baby was bitten in the head by a dog. The mother had gone into the kitchen a mere ten feet from the baby who was crawling around the living room. The bull dog was on the couch sleeping. Seconds later the mother heard a dog growl came in and saw her baby bleeding profusely. The baby was airlifted to the nearest hospital and had legally passed away twice but seems to be doing fine now.  They are going to put the dog down.  What would you do?

there was something on Facebook about dogs and small children.
It isn't wise to leave a baby or child so close to a dog AND unsupervised.

Wow, this really is a horrible story.  :(  I'm glad the baby is doing better now.  I don't think anyone can say what really happened here.  It's so critical for a parent to be with their child when you have animals.  I'm taking for granted their bull dog never did something like this before.  There's so many questions... is this their FIRST child?  When an animal is used to having all the attention and a new baby comes along, there could be problems you never dream about.  I would not put this animal down but, I might think about giving it up to a rescue that could find it a new home WITHOUT children.

I don't agree with killing the dog.  The baby probably tried to pull up or something and startled the dog and the dog snapped blindly.  I don't think it meant to hurt the baby.  And if the dog was known to be aggressive then the parent should be held responsible.  Reallysad.  I do hope the baby is okay.

This is beyond sad to me. The dog definitely snapped, for whatever reason.
I feel sorry for the mom because she probably has terrible guilt over this and blames
herself.  I know I would. I pray that child makes it. As for the animal, they should probably
put it down, reason being you wouldn't  want this to happen to another child. God
forbid. How horrible!

I think in situations like these, first they should try to find the dog another home, one without children.  If it happens once, it is more likely to happen again and you just can't take that risk.  Even if the mother would have been RIGHT THERE this still could have happened, it is not the mother's fault.  The dog should only be put down if they cannot find him an appropriate home.  It sounds to me either the dog was startled or being protective of "his space".  Very common for dogs to do that, I'm always surprised when I hear of dogs biting little children because most dogs are very careful around babies and will usually be gentle, even when upset like that.  I really hope the baby will be ok.  I can't even imagine what the parents are going through right now.

Unless the dog had rabies or was constantly aggressive I would not want to put the dog down.  They should look into trying to find the dog another home if they can.  I hate when people want to kill animals for doing what they do naturally.  They are animals they bite, they kill that's what they do.  It's like they are punishing the dog for what it does naturally.  They forget animals aren't people even though people want to treat them like they are.  I hope the baby makes a full recovery.

That's the problem with dogs, you never know how they will react to a new addition to the family. Thank God the baby is OK

Dogs and babies should not be left alone. My cousins dog also bite her baby when she was just learning to walk, they had to get rid of it.

Wow, that is one scary story.  Babies and dogs should not be kept together unless they are supervised.

I, for one, am glad the baby is doing better.  Nobody have any idea of why the dog snapped?  The mother, I take it, was watching the baby but not close enough to prevent this horrific tragedy.  The dog should be put down before it does the same thing to someone else. :dog: :dog: :dog: :( :rainbow:
