I think one of the best gifts u can give is ur self.Your time with him will mean more than something that u by.

My son is nine right now and the kind of things he's into are lego, Kinex and Nerf Guns. In fact we found a new recreational facility about an hour away from where we live that holds Nerf Gun experiences and someone there was having a birthday party. It was only $7 per hour and that included hiring the Nerf Gun. It was a great experience and both my sons loved it. Perhaps there is a facility near you? Maybe you should see what you can find on-line.

It depends on YOUR son.  We don't know what he likes to do, what he is interested in, what he already has, what kind of money you have to spend???  I don't know when you posted this so it may be after his birthday.
:D  But for ideas we need a little more information.

Zoo membership, museum memberships... I think these are excellent year long gifts.

9 yr olds are hard to shop for. My son is 10 and I had to watch him and see what he was interested in with out him knowing and also ask questions without him being aware. They are so smart at this age. Normally at this age kids like to explore science and things that can excite them, like creative things they can build or things they do with their hands. Like lego advance creation item's and similar to this. Games that deal with problem solving and brain usage. Anything to get them away electronics and major usage of computer things. I do not mind the electronics and computer usage but they do not use some motor skills that are essential to normal life skills. Also they love the interaction of mom and son or family. Most kids want your attention and affection to play along with them and explore with them. My son enjoys the love and attention. :) :) Good Luck.

Have you tried asking your son?  My like to be part of the planning.  Of course, they don't know everything, but sometimes just a theme gives you ideas for several gifts.
