As a salesman, I use cold-calling as part of my marketing. In our defense, we don't know that 10 other marketers have called you. There's no need to be mean or rude to them, they're just doing their jobs. They don't know that you "just sat down for dinner", they call during those times because that's when the most people are home (4-7pm). If they're nice and respectful to you, please be nice to them.

Uh NO.  Cold calls are illegal from what I understand.  My response is get a real job.  The people making those calls also don't want other telemarketers calling them and asking them to buy something.  It's odd you say be nice to them.  I have been cussed and called names and everything else when I say I am not interested.  I had a woman try to sell me magazines once.  She told me I had one almost a million dollars in prizes and cash.  No, I am not kidding.  All I had to do was buy 3 magazines and all this other stuff was mine.  When I told her no before I got hung up I heard her call me a "cheap *bleep*".  I had no way of calling her back or reporting her.  I am not a cheap *bleep* just because I don't want to buy magazines from a fat lazy cow who refuses to get a job that requires physical labor.    There should be a law that states the company name and a phone number they are calling from shows up on caller IDs.  See it goes both ways.
In my experience and from what I have heard from others telemarketers are pretty abusive when they call somebody and ask for money and they are turned down.

I've actually just gotten to the point where I turn off my phone around dinner time. That way I don't just avoid interruptions from telemarketers but also from anyone else that might disrupt my family time.

I just ignore, I am on the no call list but somehow they still seem to get around that, I just let it go to voicemail.

I don't think anything about phone calls at dinner.  I only use a cellular phone and I turn it off at dinner, during the movies and when I go to bed.  We have a land line but turn the ringer off.  My wife's sister got into a spat of trouble and can only make collect calls to a landline which is the only reason that we keep it....in order to take two phone calls (at pre-determined times) a month.  I am amazed at how people let telephones take over their lives.  I am somewhat disappointed when I go out to eat and see a family of four sitting down to dinner and all of them are looking at their cellular phones. Kids playing games and dad/mom talking to friends or taking care of work. Yeccchhh!
