What do you eat to keep healthy?
« on: November 18, 2013, 09:36:39 pm »
I am now 68 years old and feel like a teenager when driving my car. People don't even think I am my age because I am told I look as young as my oldest son, that makes my son laugh. Diet has a lot to do with your health, don't eat too many ready made foods and don't eat fast food it will only make you age quickly by pushing up your cholestrol and make you tired. but if you have trouble stopping once a month shouldn't do any damage.  my self I either eat oatmeal or eggs for breakfast with decaf coffee. for lunch I have yogurt. and for dinner mainly chicken (cooked in the oven) with mashed potatoes with a vegetable or fish (not breaded or battered) and slow cook it in my electric fry pan or put it in the oven no potatoes but sometimes a veggie.

Veggies and fruit are what I believe keep you healthy and regular. I love them both. I also raise some of my veggies. I have 2 seasons here in Texas. One for winter covered gardening and spring/summer. I like knowing that my lettuce and spinach do not have pesticides or an ecoli danger. I have not had much luck on the fruit trees. I always wash everything before I eat it and peel some fruits. Keep it fresh!

First I drink a lot of water.  I do have a morning cup of coffee and typically a cup of tea in the evening.

Breakfasts I mainly have a homemade fruit smoothie made with a variety of fresh fruit (typically 4-5 different fruits combined, along with a cup of rice or almond milk and some wheat germ).  On the weekends, sometimes I'll have oatmeal or eggs (or pancakes or waffles for a treat) for variety.

For lunch I have some cheese slices, lunch meat and a hunk of homemade wheat bread or biscuits.

Dinner tends to be a meat main course, starch (typically rice, sometimes potatoes), and vegetables.  I tend to rotate between beef, chicken, pork and fish (salmon and trout are my favs).  Lately I've gotten into making homemade stews in my crockpot - potatoes, 2-3 veggies, beef or chicken, spices and broth - makes a week's worth of meals for me.

I do like the occasional treat/desert - an those are mainly homemade as well, so I can control what goes into them vs store bought ones.

I started a garden this past summer - and have some of my produce frozen for winter use.  My goal over the next few years is to try to increase my garden productivity and get better at freezing and learn how to can so I can start eating home grown vs store bough fruits/veggies.  I must admit, my home grown veggies tasted way better and lasted a lot longer in the refrigerator than anything store bought (including "organic").

I am near your age and like the sounds of your menu.  But where do you get your fruits?  Did you forget them?

Yes that is a healthy way of eating and so true about the processed foods also they say sugar ages you...so recently I have taken note of that...because I have a very large sweet tooth but I'd rather look younger than my age...so kudo's to you
