 could be "nothing lost"
instead of 'gained'.

Nope, I'm gonna disagree with you here.  Lots of times in my life when I have put forth no effort lots has been lost and it is only my own fault.  Nothing ventured could mean a lot of loss in some cases.  Just my little 2 cents worth.

Someday you question everything:  why venture at all?   What would you gain and is it worth it?

When one "ventures" into something, there is at least knowledge gained whether venture results in success or failure.

Like the Edison quote from the movie "National Treasure" - that Thomas Edison didn't fail, rather he discovered 2000 ways how NOT to make a lightbulb.

Glass half full VS glass half empty? I prefer to look at the optimistic side of things and put everything I can into what I do.  Fusion cash for instance. I miss maybe four to six days a year because I am out of contact zones. But for the other three hundred and sixty days I am here posting, clicking, opening e-mails, performing tool bar searches and listening to the radio and it has been paying off.  I haven't been venturing into the gym lately so I have lost my body but gained some unwanted fat!  Kind of a double edged interpretation of your initial statement!  I have been pushing myself at work and have gained respect, cash and a big headache!
