Am I overprotective?...
« on: March 04, 2013, 05:23:17 am »
???  I have one of my sisters live w me and I look out for her as dad in trusted me to watch her. Im in Arizona, my dad is in Alaska. In Arizona I hear all sorts of bad things happend on the news and automatically and instinctively I tend to not trust people all around me whenever I go. I take extra precaution and triple check everything. My second oldest sister hook my sister up w a guy ( sister who lives w me) and I barely know the guy, I've only hung out w him once when he came over from las vegas to visit my sister, just to have a sence of who he is, but still I have doubts....no matter what my sister is more important to me then a stranger. Plus she has a medical condition...Iam not controlling I see myself as a protector, but am I overpritective? :) lol now a days there are less and less gentleman out so I guess I feel right having a third eye on this guy my sister in contact with.....

While I understand that you feel like you have to be your sister's protector, life has taught me that you can be overprotective, but I see that it is a crutch.  Being overprotective means that you have put your life on hold just to watch over her 24-7.  Please explain to me what is going to happen to your sister if God calls you home to be with him? She will be in the world not knowing what to do for herself.   You need to release the tight reins you have over her because, at some point, she is going to have to do things for herself without you holding her hand. :o :o :o

Yea I think you have to give your sister a little space to let her live an learn by her self but you can still be there to give her advice

I guess I would have to ask how old your sister is.  If she's 18 or under, I would tend to be a little over-protective myself (much like you would with your own children).  My daughter is 18 and I still like to know who she hangs with and where she goes when she goes out.  However, at some point in time, you have to give your kids (or sister) the benefit of the doubt to make good decisions on their own or they'll never learn to live independently from you.

Thank you all for your replies. I am not skipping out on my life. We have family and friends here in Arizona as well and my sister is still in school and very well involved in daily activities. We are very flexible people. I guess I should refrase what I mean about being protective, I would more likely describe as mother looking over her kid and making sure she is not hurt or no one hurts her. But in addition to that I must add that in all my 14year living in America, coming from russia, I never would adapt to American culture. We have been taught that even at 18yrs old is too early to start dating, we have been taught respect, morals, love family and education. Moving to America it's like moving to a completely free area, in a sense, do what u want when u want it. I remember attending 6th grade and what I saw shocked me: 6th graders kissing making out, girls wearing clothes w too much skin showing, i had friends who had a boyfriend and previously had 3 ex boyfriends. I couldnt understand that. I couldn't accept that kind of living. No offense but I was just raised differently. I believe I would never adapt to that particular American culture. Because that's where teens get pregnant and lots of kids end up abandont. I guess you can call me an old guess you can call me old fashion, and even so being aware of what's going on around and wanting the best for my sister and not being used by a guy, I talk to her and give advises and she opens up to me :)
