Gluten Free!!
« on: February 27, 2013, 11:51:08 am »
I used to think gluten free products were tasteless, gross, and pointless. But doing research showed that gluten is not good for the body. My younger brother started to suffer badly with food allergies and we later learned from the doctor that gluten was the issue. My mom started to fill the cabinets with gluten free products, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Sprouts type of groceries. I was annoyed at first and was very reluctant to try it. My mom had been shopping at Whole Foods and TJs since as long as I can remember, but gluten free was a different story. But to support my brother, who was basically addicted to "glutens" you could say, we all tried gluten free products to encourage him to be healthy and not continue to harm his body. It was fine incorporating the products into my daily diet but switching over completely took a little time. Im not going to lie, some gluten free products are tasteless and discusting to me. You do have to experiment a bit when cooking at home. But over all we have found delicious replacements for every type of gluten product! We've made delicious pancakes and cakes that taste even better than regular store bought ones. And of course meat, fruit and veggies are never a problem. I have even lost weight avoiding gluten! Luckily, many grocery stores and restaurants are even jumping on the bandwagon for gluten free products. Its not as hard as it sounds. There are soo many replacements now-a-days that are just as tasty. Walking to my pantry right now some gluten free things we have are jiffy peanut butter, chips, tortillas, cereal..and the cool thing is even big brands are making gluten free products so you can still eat your favorite foods, really. and like i said, many good restaurants have celiac friendly (gluten free) menus. some of our favorites are PF Changs, Amicis, Dominoes, Erik's Deli, Applebees.. Even places without gluten free bread like Chipotle or Cheescake factory (my favorites), we just have our burgers protein style or our burritos in a bowl. Just as yummy. And if you have a sweet tooth like me, there are whole bakeries that are gluten free, like Miglet's Cupcake Shop. They have every type of desert, sweets you can think of and 90% of there stuff is gluten free and OMG its delicious. I swear I cannot taste any difference, and trust me Ive had my share of junk food!  There are really too many products and ways to list them but seriously, if you are having any reactions or problems with your body, it will be worth it to research and look into going gluten free. Im sure your doc can tell you all the health benefits.
*just thought i'd throw that out there!

Great post!     My brother-in-law recently learned that he has a problem with gluten, and I've noticed that more and more food brands have gluten-free alternatives.  I actually can't taste the difference, so if my household goes gluten-free for some reason, I may not have a big issue with it.

I was thinking of trying to cut gluten out of my diet just to see if I could notice some improvements in my health.  I've only tried gluten free spaghetti noodles, which I ended up not liking very much.  I'm willing to try more things though, so that I can find things that I like and then try to switch to a gluten free diet.

Gluten-free foods taste pretty good to me. They have many gluten-free foods and I eat them like I eat all the other types of foods.
Opinion: 1) a view, judgment, or appraisal formed in the mind about a particular matter 2) belief stronger than impression and less strong than positive knowledge

I suffer from Multiple Sclerosis and Epilepsy.  While on medications, I became profoundly more ill because my body cannot handle those chemicals.  Since then, I have opted for a gluten-free, gmo-free, organic Ketogenic diet.

We do all of our cooking from scratch.  I have the most awesome rice flour (gluten free) blueberry muffin recipes.  We have also made gluten free breads using buckwheat flour and other gluten free flours.  Currently, we are trying recipes with Coconut flour.  So far my favorite gluten free flours are rice flours, almond flour, and buckwheat flour.

There are many gluten free recipes out there that are amazing and far tastier than their alternatives.

Gluten is s a protein composite found in foods processed from wheat and related grain species.  As many of these grains are also genetically modified, it makes them doubly worse, in my opinion.

Another example of the cruel ironies our bodies put us through.  Foods that are so pleasureable to our palates, like sugary or fatty, are so bad for the rest of the body.  Why can't our taste buds be in love with celery?

Contrary to popular belief, fats are not all bad.  The Ketogenic diet, for instance, is high in fat and is used to control seizures, help cancer patients (as cutting out sugars, but keeping fats starves tumors), and aids in weight-loss.  When fats are the fuel source instead of sugar, the body burns fat instead of accumulating it.  There is plenty of research to back this up.  I owe my seizure control to a diet high in fats.  Since my husband began the diet with me, he dropped two pant sizes, and no longer has IBS.
