I find it a strange phrase because making the bed doesn't usually come with consequences. =P

I've always taken it to mean you must suffer the consequences of your actions.

I often hear the saying "you made your bed now lay in/on it" BUT what does that actually mean  :dontknow:

In short, it means you have made your choice (whether it is good or bad) and now you are the one that must live with the choice.

This started as a rhyme for jumping rope bby. I can't remember the rest of the saying we we used to jump rope to it.

I guess it means you made the mistake and now you have to live with it. You can't blame it on someone else.

Most sayings like this are very old and refer to things that no longer apply in this modern world.  Take threshold for instance.  We know it means the raised, bottom part of the door frame, but most people today probably don't know it's origin.  It comes from the days of dirt floors that were covered with straw (thres).  It literally meant the raised strip at the bottom of the door that held the thres in.

You made your bed now lay in it probably has a similar origin that referred to a bad choice of bedding material or location for a bed.  You can't complain about your bed being uncomfortable or not getting sleep if you are the one who chose the materials or location of it.

I find the origin of words and saying fascinating.  Keep learning and questioning.
