Can ANYONE please help me understand this?

I have never understood this concept. I see it happening on a regular basis. Often people are more attracted to the people that mistreat them the most.

I think these days people stay with someone because they are lonely and scared to be left alone.   I see it all the time people being mistreated and stay.  I know it is hard to develop another relationship the older you get but, I think if some people would give it a chance they could get out of the situation and be happier.
