Have Diabetes But Stopped Taking Insulin!
« on: July 06, 2012, 07:08:36 am »
I have diabetes but I have not taken insulin since 2009. I know that it is better for me to take the insulin but I did not like the blood sugar swings. I would find myself not eating enough food when I take the insulin then my blood sugar would drop low then I would eat and drink apple juice to bring it up then my blood sugar would be too high.

I decided to manage my diabetes with diet and exercise and for me this works better.

Best of luck to you with that.  It's very good that you can manage it with diet and exercise.

My mom just started having to take insulin on top of some pills to manage her diabetes.  I hope that it's a wake-up call to her to take it a bit more seriously than she has recently.  My siblings and I have tried to encourage her to really focus on her diet and to exercise a bit more, so I hope that she'll be able to do that, and get off the insulin like you have.

I don't take insulin for my diabetes but I do take oral medication. I also exercise and watch what I eat. I get bad headaches if I don't eat within a certain time period though. I hope you do really well.

I am Type 2 and on the oral medication.  I understand what you are going through and there's time I don't want to eat either.  My problem is my sweet tooth and weight gain which is an constant battle.  Be careful, talk to your doctor, or somebody you feel comfortable with but most of all eat something even if it's nothing but a small yogurt and you will be fine.

Good for you!! Most cases of diabetes can be managed with a lifestyle change and some weight loss. When I was working at the jail, I would lead power walking classes with several insulin dependant diabetics. The one and only inmate who followed the program, and would walk even when I was not there, also stopped her consumption of sugary commissary snacks, ended up no lomger needing insulin. It can be done but it takes consistency and discipline, as you are an example of.

My girlfriend is type 1 and has the same problems that you had, OP. She doesn't count carbs like she should, but I make sure that she takes her insulin after every meal (even if I get it ready myself). She has some off days where she forgets she's diabetic, but she eats pretty decently.

I think that what you are doing is amazing!  The cost of insulin is ridiculously expensive for being as important as it is. What is your sugar running now?

the best way to control blood sugar levels is to stop eating and drinking anything with High Fructose corn syrup. Your Pancreas keeps "sugar" in your blood in check and your liver stores "High Fructose Corn Syrup" that stays in your blood stream way to long. your pancreas trys to make enough insulin to compensate for it. so staying away from it ("High Fructose Corn Syrup") will keep your levels in the normal rage with out having to take insulin. along with that and a diet my levels have gone from 370 to 125 and my A1c went from 13 to 6. doctors won't tell you that because the pharmaceuticals pay for the doctors schooling so the doctors are always trying to get their patience to take prescriptions for the pharmaceuticals paying for their collage. if you would like a piece of mind, do a goggle search to verify what I said, if you find anything different, please come back here and post it. I would greatly appreciate it.

My mother in law has type 2 and she will not eat right and does not check her levels. (ever) I try to tell her that having diabetes is not something to take so lightly..but she doesn't listen and is very stubborn. I tell her to at least cut out the high fructose....I wish she would listen! She has major heart disease, and chronic kidney failure on top of it all. I stayed with her for awhile when things got really bad and she got a lot better. Now she is back to frying everything and eating cake, ice cream, and candy bars. I find soda in the fridge all the time too. You can only help people if they are willing to help themselves I guess. She has a lot of people that love her and we are all praying for her. If only we meant as much to her as food does.  :'(

My dad is type 2 also, but he really watvches his diet, weight, and you would not know his age without being told, Takes really good care of him self. He didn't at first and had a couple of bad scares. Then we went though a nagging peroid and finally he settled down too do what he was suppose too and everything is great right now.
