Don't really know what causes it, but I think it would depend on the type of leg cramp.  I get occasional ones where you stretch the leg and it goes away almost immediately, so no clue.  I would assume tight muscles, perhaps a lack of oxygen to the area, maybe you need more of a certain vitamin.  I'd normally just start there and try other things if those don't work.  If it's persistent pain, I'd talk to a doctor about it cause it could be something that can't be fixed so easily.

I agree with the person who said if it is a charlie horse it is because of lack of magnesium or potassium. Normaly that is the reason, but you should have that check out. I have back problems and I don't get too much charlie horse, but do get smasms alot and they are both diffrent. If you don't know ask your Dr. Hope this helps  :angel11:

Drink pickle juice before you hit the sack, my husband swears by it and he hasn't jumped out of bed doing the "charlie horse" shuffle lately!!

It is usually due to dehydration or an imbalance of minerals (usually potassium or magnesium). Since you're diabetic, my guess is dehydration; we diabetics are more prone to that.

Also since you are diabetic, it could be a symptom of something even worse... Poor circulation is a common condition in diabetics and could cause the leg cramps. If they persist, I'd see a doctor to get things checked out. The worst thing would be thinking you could treat the cramps with just water and bananas and find out that you had a heart attack lying in wait.

I always heard cramps are due to a lack of potassium.  I don't know how true that is, but whenever I have a muscle cramp I try to make sure I eat or drink something high in potassium.

I get those. Feels like someone is trying to rip the muscle out of my leg. Pickle juice seems to help me some with it. I try and drink some before I go to bed at night.
