Male abuse...double standard?
« on: January 30, 2012, 12:57:10 pm »
Black eyes, busted lips, & bruised ribs. We are sickened when we see women suffering at the hands of her abuser. What about when it's a man being abused? It has taken many years for us as a society to even say it happens to men.

Is there a double standard when it comes to male abuse. Do guys still laugh at the stories of male abuse?

It is a double standard and that seems so sad that men really can't come foward when abused.  I knew a male friend who was being abused and it wasn't until I (a female) stepped in that it stopped.  My brother had a friend who was studying to be a cop and was actually raped but couldn't even report it because he knew how it would look.  I don't think there should be a double standard but there is and what is sad is these men subject to horrors just have to find a way to deal with it because there is no where they can go.

You are so right! My brother/ son has been abused by their mates for quite some time;but the problem that I see, they will not leave (maybe 2 to 3 days) their abusive mates. To make it so bad, they always say that she will be alright in a couple of days.   :BangHead: When they return, they're treated like GOLD; for at least a week  :dontknow: and the same thing happens over, over, and over again. The worst part is that a man normally doesn't come forward about abuse. So  :crybaby2: sad and heart breaking. What am I to do; besides be there for them and support them the best way that I know how. May God Bless Those That Haven't got any help or support!

Abuse is abuse, regardless of sex. Anyone who abuses another is an abuser. It is domestic violence!

I agree abuse is abuse however how can a man come foward?  If his female mate is the abuser and he reports her, even if something is done, he is basically 'marked' for life and subject to 'mental' abuse the rest of his life.  He just can win and our society is so pathetic when it comes to an 'image' that men can't get help no matter how bad they may want it.  I think perhaps that is the reason most men will stay in an abusive relationship since it's not like they can report it and they would rather 'being used to it' stay in it rather than allow another male to be subject to the abuse.

I completely forgot about the rape aspect. That is even worse. People don't even believe men can be raped. What a horror feeling to know the person will get away with a crime because no one will believe you.

I guess it's just that it's less common.  Plus it's a pride thing.  The men don't want to say they're getting beat up... by a woman.
