How many little blinking lights do you see at home?
« on: February 11, 2012, 10:19:35 am »
Our phones, our laptops, our desktops, our t.v., our printers, our VCRs, our TIVOs, our monitors, our microwaves, clocks, coffee pots, etc. all have blinking lights.  I see red, orange, green and blue ones at night.  That means that every one of these are using electricity.  I just read that if you unplug many of these at night, you can save a lot of money on electricity.  If you leave your phone or other charger plugged into the wall, it still uses electricity.  I know I am guilty of some of these, but am not willing to unplug a lot of them.  I do turn off my printer, but usually leave my computer on all the time, unless I am gone for a day.

I don't have anything "on" overnight except the refrigerator, sometimes a heater if it's really cold out and the computer, and a nightlight... I will probably be unplugging the computer when I'm done from now on.  One of my kittens has a "thing" for chewing cords and I've had to replace several of them.  Most have been "wrapped" in plastic tubing but he STILL manages to find the ones I've overlooked.  At least if they're unplugged, he won't get hurt and there's no chance of a fire.  (The blinking lights from the computer causes my yellow lab to start uncontrollable trembling if a night light isn't on.  Wierd, huh?)

I see as many blinking lights in my household as the number of little voices in my head telling me to pull pranks on my family!  Just kidding, lol!  I have a master switch in my study that completely turns off the electricity.  I hadn't noticed the blinking lights until you brought it up in this blog and now I am going to make a conscious effort to turn them all off.  Our electricity bills are through the roof during the winter and it would be a miracle if I could reduce that cost by ten percent or more.  I also need to weatherize my doors and windows because the heating bills are crazy!

Generally, if a light is blinking, it means something needs attention (check message, reset time, done charging, etc.).  Todays electronics mostly use LED's and they use very little amperage.  The only constantly blinking light that I know of in my house is the "link" indicator on my cable modem.  That is one that you want to be blinking, otherwise, no connection.

That is a really cute kitten but sadly,  it isn't mine.
I  discovered that mine managed to chew several holes in the tv cord last night while I was on-line and now the tv is going to have to go to a repair shop. :(
My kitten "Big Tuna" is pictured below on the RIGHT, sitting upright (he's the one that likes to chew) and my other kitten "Sammy" (short for salmon) is on the LEFT.  (My two "catfish").  They both have the same birthdate but different litters.  "Tuna" is a Norwegian Forest Cat and he truly belongs in a forest I think.   lol

I shut down my computer at night; I don't unplug it.
I wear a Bucky mask to keep the light out. I can't remember when I started doing that. I can't remember when they were invented. Maybe I'll look it up. You can learn alot and get good ideas from people around you.

Years ago, someone told me that if a person turns the lights on and off, it uses more electricity than if they are always left on. Motel hallways and apartment complex hallways need light in case people are in the hallways at night.....their safety.

I first noticed all the little lights one night when my 3 grandsons were spending the night and decided to 'camp out' in the living room. When I turned out the lamp, all 3 started asking," What's that light, Grammie?"--all pointing at different ones. It was a wake-up call to me and I have since remedied all the little lights at night. I am sure it will save $ on electricity over time.

I really don't know but I have enough appliances I know that. Next time the electric goes out I think maybe I will count all the blinking lights when the electric comes back on. :dontknow: :dontknow: :dontknow:

I have a lot that don't blink.  They just tell me that the device is on.
