Formula --- is it okay?
« on: October 01, 2011, 07:58:39 am »
So I've been nursing my baby, she will be 5 months on Monday.  When she is 6 months I'm going to stop nursing her and just pump/feed it to her in a bottle.  I feel like at 6 months she will be too big to nurse and I don't feel comfortable doing it.  I am also thinking I won't be able to pump enough to feed her strictly my milk so whenever we needed it I was going to give her formula.  We have some formula still from the hospital and I was wondering if it is okay to use newborn formula even though she isn't a newborn.  I looked at the ingredients and the ONLY difference is the amount of vitamin d in the formula, (15 more somethings in the newborn kind) I'm sure it won't hurt, right?

It is mainly your first milk ( colostrum) that is soo vital to the immune system for your baby. Formula has been improved on soo very much over the years and is wonderful for busy moms that are unable to breast feed. I only did the first 3 months with my children because I did not produce enough milk for them. I did however make sure that they had the colostrum followed by as much breast milk as possible.

Formula is okay to use.  I did the same thing you did and my baby is healthy and is 18 yrs. old.

has your baby had a bottle before? do you know she will accept the bottle/
The newborn formula will be JUST fine to use until it's gone -- then you can buy the right one for your babies age.
Good job exclusively breastfeeding for 6 months -- that is wonderful! :)

That formula will be fine. I wasn't able to nurse my second child (little girl) at all and formulas went over just fine with her. When my son stopped nursing, he didn't want a bottle either, he went straight to a sippy cup! You never know, you just might be feeding your breastmilk/formula combination from a cup! they grow up too fast :binkybaby:good luck, and try not to worry too much! :fish:

Formula is okay to use, but nothing beats natural milk, if you can can use it. Just do the best you can.

Yeah I work part time, but this week I had 6 shifts in a row which usually doesn't happen and I am having trouble keeping up.  Today is day 5 and so far so good and I MIGHT be able to do tomorrow, too, but I told my fiance that if he has to use formula it's okay and not to starve her lol.

I also tried to mix my milk with her baby cereal but gave in to using water because my supply is so low.

Yes formula is great. They wouldn't recommend feeding it to your baby if it wasn't my little guy just turned one an is being transitioned on milk :( he's growing up so fast. I love Similac. I think it's the best formula out there. I also got the ready to feed kind. My son didn't drink the powder. Give it a try they have all sorts of formulas. Sensitive, soy, spit-up. Anything you need for you baby to grow they have.

I think formula is better because everything you ingest or even breathe in is going into that breast milk and into your baby

And that is why there have been thousands of recalls over the years for baby formula, but never one for breast milk?

I used both with all 4 of my kids formula and the boob! my yougest is 11 months and he does great on it just dont go swithch formula's alot cuz that can upset there tummys and make them not able to poop and thats one fussy baby! but in my opinion its better to give both due to them getting more nutrition!
