getting used to baby

as many of you know I had a baby boy on 9-10, he is now 18 days old and doing great, but he likes to sleep between my husband and I 
he is nursing and he does like to nurse often and sometimes for a long period of time at night (I think it's more for comfort and soothing than food sometimes) -- I hear this is normal...

any pointers for when we might see him being able to transition to his own space and to comfort himself a little better?
