Not all video games are created equal.  ;)  It depends on how long the game is #1, then how much I like it, and whatever else is going on in my life at the time.  I'd say on average, 2 weeks for an Xbox game (playing for an hour or two several days a week), but it could be longer or shorter than that for the reasons I mentioned previously.

I always play them at the highest difficulty and if there are any merciless type difficulty mods I tend to use them as well.  I am never in a hurry to beat any game as I prefer to try make them as challenging as possible.  I see many people seeking hacks and cheats or other exploits and I cannot for the life of me understand that.  There are also those that want to play on the most difficult settings out of the gate and get angry when they can't easily beat them claiming "the game is too hard" -- could really never understand that even more than the previous example.

For me, I only get enjoyment out of a challenge.  This goes for real life as well as games.  In sports I would rather lose a close game than win an easy victory.  Perhaps I was raised that if it came easy it was not of value.  I am not really sure but I tend to measure myself by the level of competition more so than the win.
There are only 10 types of people in the world:  those who understand binary, and those who don't.
