I have 2 jobs as well. My full time job pays pretty good, but I don't like it. My part time job pays peanuts, but I enjoy that one. Oh, well. I'm guess I'm glad I'm working. And good luck to all those who are looking.

I know the feeling about no job. Everything that is available in my area you need associates degrees. Yes, there is a program for 55 and older, but what if youre not yet 55? It doesnt make it any easier for those of us between 50 and 55..... just as difficult if not more so. I have sent out several resumes. Gotten several call backs as far as "we are sorry but we already filled that position". Our economy just isnt rebounding as everyone seems to think it is. Rural America is still economically DOWN! :BangHead:

It was hard for my fiancee to get a job as well. But we kept our thoughts positive and he linked and networked and sent in resumes like crazy and finally found one.

I feel like there should be more ease in the job market soon enough. It's hard not having a job, it could be really frustrating.

I am like you in my 50's and out of work. I have a Bachelor degree and half way through my Master's Degree. I moved in with my mother to take care of her or I would have trouble paying my bills. My mother now has to have someone with her practically 24 hours a day, but I was looking for part time help and they would rather hire someone younger because they don't have to pay them for their experience. So what are older people to do?

If it were me I'd start my own business.  It doesn't have to be something big just something you can do on your own.  Look at the skills and life experience you have and find ways to turn it into cash.

Try AARP and your county JOBS program.  Also, seems that many services need drivers.  Usually it is just minimum wage but better than nothing at all.  Some of the rent a car companies use shuttle drivers.  Not much help in rural america but would be in the cities.

Hi guys - thought I 'd give you a follow up on the difficulty of job hunting.

My part time position panned out for me.  They offered me the job yesterday...only 14 hours each week and additional fill in as needed but hey. that's okay.  I feel much better now.  I found out that in our county, there is a senior job program that educates and trains and places seniors in part time jobs.  It is income or need based but the library directed me there to get them to "sponsor" me so that the library could give me additional hours.  Check it out in your county if your over 55 and don't have alot coming in each month or a bunch in the savings accout.

Also, husband got his job and looks like he will be working almost full time (no benefits, mini wage) but we are very grateful. Here is another place to look for work.  Many govt funded programs for driving old folks to their doctor appts.  This is all over the country so do some web searches or contact Amer Cancer Soc, Passport programs, county seniors programs and health programs and they can maybe turn you on to something in your area.

Being lucky enough to have had a job all my life, I didn't know there was so much public assistance stuff that you can tap into.

Better do this ASAP. It's in the spending cuts coming up. No more will there be any programs like this. It's the destitute, poor, and seniors, these spending cuts are going to hurt the worse.

I just quit one of my jobs because management had changed in an epic battle to lower wages across the board as they prepare the company to be sold.  I had been with that job for six years and they still want me to come back for one shift a month because all of the clients need a long term face to associate with. Cheesy but I love the clients so I will work the shift.  I have found several opportunities and I am 48 years old.  If I don't find something I will create a new job...I have done it many times before.

Yes, it is tough out there.  For every age and level of education.  I am blessed right now, but I have the right skills at the right time.  (teaching college and a technology trainer)   My average classroom size has exploded over the last few years.  Most of my students are over 30 now.   Down right scary!   Many members of my family are seeking work or are taking work at a lot lower pay to make ends meet.   Again, that goes from the teenage/college student all the way up to high end corporate level people.

Hang in there and God Bless!
