Would you return a check from the United States Federal government if you did not need it?

That depends... was it sent to me by mistake?  Then, yes.  If it was something like a tax refund, then no.

If it was a mistake I would return for sure. Because when they find out the sent you the check by mistake. They will get back even if you already have spent it! >:(

I definitely would not. If they are that careless with their money with the economy in its present state, they deserve to lose it.

If I received in error I would return the check. Two reasons...right thing to do & it will come back to get you

I am with the majority.  If it were a mistake, I would send it back.  If not, I would keep it.  After all, I am paying them my money all the time.

No, If I didn't need it I'm sure I could find someone who does.  A neighbor with a past due power bill,  my landlord could put it towards someone's rent that is behind.  I could give it to my church or buy books to donate to my child's school.  I could set up a trust fund or savings account for college for my child, niece, nephew.  There may be members of my family that are hurting financially....and there's always lots of charities and don't forget about Japan!   ;D
