HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A REDWINGED BLACKBIRD?

Over the years I have seen hundreds of redwings. My mother-in-law was a huge birder and taught me so much. They love marshy areas, that is where they nest, and I have a large one close to my home. You can also tell the males by their call once you get to know it. It is a VERY distinct and loudconk-a-ree, conk-a-ree. I know blackbirds, in general, are very annoying and destructive especially to farmers, but the redwing is not in that class. I think male redwings are very pretty myself - you'll know when you see one.

I agree, jordandog, you'll know when you see him!  We have a pair that visit our feeders yearly since moving out to the "country."  I couldn't believe it the first time I saw one.  He's beautiful - looks like he's in the military!  I have several bird books and tapes with their sounds and love to record what comes through in the journal.  Hubby used to laugh at me looking through the books when an unknown would come through.  Now he's just like me with that.  We both have binoculars ready at hand now!!

We have one at our feeder this morning.  Lots of different birds out there today.  Red Headed woodpeckers, goldfinches, red finches, nuthatches, doves, chickadees and some little sparrow bird by the hundrds, also blue birds and starlings duking it out for nesting territory.  Love to watch the birds. Best burd feeder us a 1/2 gal milk jug with sticks poked through the sides (use a hot nail to make the holes) put a wire through the top and there you go....bird cafe.

Hey, that's a great feeder idea!  It must be extremely popular with the birds since you have so many coming in!  I guess they are spreading the word to the others!  I'll have to try my hand at that one.
