locked topics

Does anyone know why some topic get locked? I've read them and they don't seem to be breaking the rules or to be offensive in any way or even too old.  Just curious....some of them were mine and I wanted to respond to kind comments from others but couldn't because they were locked.  Lt me know if you know.  Thanks.
