actors, politicians, etc..... I don't understand how 2 married people could be separated & yet be sleeping with other people. Wasn't it until death do they part. Not until the divorce papers are signed, screwing around on our current spouses is okay? If marriage is so sacred, why are people flinging it around like it was *bleep*? Maybe  the government should tax marriage instead of the middle class & poor people. Maybe if it cost more to get married people will take marriage more seriously. There's so many cheating, spouse abuse, separations, divorces now a days, the government can get the US out of this bad economy! For example, TAXED/FINED for cheating, taxed for any form of spousal abuse, tax for getting a separation, & taxed for getting divorce & the spouse that caused the issue will be charged DOUBLE! LoL, just an idea, trying to think out of the box to help our economy. No offense to anybody, just an idea.

Not taking offense just commenting and asking a question....

Are you married??? Just wondering.

I agree that spousal abuse should be treated more harshly but many times they can't actually prove anything, especially if the spouse won't speak up. However, I don't think that anyone who wants to get a divorce should be taxed for it. Divorce is expensive enough and one of the reasons that my separation has not turned into a divorce (after 18 months) is that I can't afford to put the paperwork through.

ON THE FLIP SIDE: Taxing marriage will only lead to less people actually getting married and you would want to tax domestic partnerships as well. But if you do that then it would only create more people (mostly women) that are uninsured since you have to have some kind of paperwork for your spouse/partner/bf or gf to be put on your insurance. More ER visits because people will avoid the Dr which means longer waits at the ER and more people dying because the resources of the ER are being used to treat non-emergency cases or cases that could have been taken elsewhere if people would have gotten treatment sooner. Taxing divorce will only cause people who should not be together any more to stay together to avoid the tax and therefore creating an environment that nobody, especially children, should have to live in. This situation is already bad enough with people being forced to live together because they can't afford to sell their house and get out.

And I don't think that it is necessarily more people aren't taking marriage seriously as it is that the attitude toward divorce has changed and it's not taboo anymore. So less couples that are unhappy are staying together....maybe it could be worked out if forced to stay together but maybe they can't. Especially those who get married young, as you grow up if you grow in different directions you may discover that you just aren't compatible anymore.
