I just remembered a scenario a few months ago.  I had gone out to lunch for sushi with some coworkers.  They had been to the place a day before and was saying how good it was and they also commented on how totally rude and mean the waitress was.  They thought it was kind of funny but still.  So the next day we went and true enough the food was good but the waitress was a complete rude #$$%^.  And her rude behavior was totally uncalled for.

Ask me if I left a tip?  My coworkers left a tip but I didn't and when she saw I did not leave a tip she pointed at me and gave me a mean look.  My coworkers didn't know I didn't leave a tip because we all paid with credit cards (we tend to do this to keep track of work expenses) and asked me why she was pointing at me I just shrugged and said I don't know.  I know they tipped her because one left cash and the other talked about how much to tip.

I refused to tip because of her absolute meanness.  I haven't been back since because when I go to that town it's either late or I leave too early to get the lunch special but the food is good and I have recommended it to my other coworkers but I also warn them about the waitress who may also be an owner or maybe a relative since it seems like a family owned place.  Another coworker went there and he also commented on how mean she was so it's not like she was having a bad day she seems to be like that all the time and I am sure people still tip her for being mean because that's what's expected.

I work in the restaurant business in the kitchen but my husband is a bartender. Heres the thing if you go to a fine dining restaurant the wait staff might get paid $5 an hour plus tips, but if you go to casual dining(applebees, o'charleys, outback, etc) the wait staff only gets paid $2.13 an hour plus what ever tips they make.  And yes if they can't make their living from the tips they make maybe they are not good at their job and they need to find a new one, but how can they ever know if their are those of you who do not tip because you think you shouldn't have to or because that is all the money you have. If you are gonna go out then you need to add that into what you are planning on spending. I also agree that it depends on the service, I always start at 18% as soon as i walk through the door and it will either go up or down after that depending on the service i get.  But i don't ever go below 10%. And to let you know giving a small percentage when you get horrible service is more of a slap in the face for them than nothing at all, because when you leave nothing you are just looked at as cheap.  and if you want to go out and you only have money for the food then go get fast food or pick up a pizza.

I disagree completely. Restaurants need to own up to the responsibility of paying wages PERIOD! Tipping should ALWAYS be optional and based on performance!

If you want to go to a RESTAURT you need to check your wallet (considering tipping), if you have enough money go ahead and go in  ;D , if you don't have enough money, just drive by a FAST FOOD restaurant and buy you a dollar burger !  :sad1:

Until something is REALLY DONE , Yes I agree with this message.

Well the minimum wage for servers where I live is $2.13 an hour, I was raised to ALWAYS tip usually I tip around $10, if they did a good job a little more, and if it was buffet or they weren't too attentive I'll leave a $5. Although there are some servers out there that just expect you to come and give them money, there are lots of servers that bust there as* for a $1 or so tip to support their families, but there are people that KNOW to tip so a waiter can usually make a decent amount of money. I also believe in karma, if you don't want to tip the server get your food TO GO!
