To be honest I cannot say. Because to me, for one to give comforting words to another person who is feeling down is not possible unless you have undergone the same pain. The only thing I would be able to do is to listen to them.

I guess I can relate to both sides, listening and trying to comfort with words. I've had a rough time and not only was it good for me to have someone listen to me but no matter what they said, it was a comfort just knowing that they cared enough to listen. My best answer to give and to remind myself with, is that everything happens for a reason and no matter how terrible it is, try to find something good to pull from it. Feeling alone and hopeless is the worst feeling.

It depends on the situation and how well you may know that person.  But sometimes comforting words do not help when you hurting and grieving.

I think you should take clues from the person.  If they want to talk then you listen.

Upon the breaking of morning's first light, a new day has begun. Through this darkness that now you travel ... soon the sun shall shine again. Tomorrow's light is but a day away.

I've never had to give any comforting words to anyone else. But when I'm in trouble I usually tell myself that it could BE SOOOO MUCH WORSE THEN THIS! Which makes me feel better because it's true. And also I'm not dead yet, so there is still ways to make it better.

My number one thing is to reassure them that no matter what happens, they will come through it.
There will be a moment in their future when their present situation will be just a memory in their past.

People are far too often paralysed by the fear that they won't get through something.
Whether it's a broken relationship, getting laid off work, bad grades in school,
someone in the hospital, their own illness, etc.

But they always make it out to the other side, they always come through the situation
in one form or another.

Why? That's the only way out of the situation: to go through it.
Reap the harvest of what's learned at the time.
Whether it's figuring out new ways to handle things, creating impromptu solutions to problems,
or a journey of emotional discovery within yourself.

 :)
