I thought it was but heard on the news that the new decade doesn't start until 2021.

Yes It is a new decade. Just like 2000-2009 and 2010 and 2019 were decades. this one will last until 2029. Happy new decade everyone

I count it as a new decade because the last year ends in 0, like all the other decades

I guess that makes sense. Just like we are living in the 21st century which began in 2001 and will end in 2100.

Yes.  It is not debatable.  It amazes me at what people will argue about on the internet.
