Re-Gifting....

I will re-gift if I know I will not use it and suspect another person might like it.  I have only done it a few times in my life.  However, I once got a name of someone for a Christmas gift who I could not stand and who had been very stand-offish to me so I went ahead and gave her something I had received several years before and planned on donating to a charity.

I bought myself something once and ended up giving it as a gift to someone else, because I thought she would really like it.

Once in a while I will regift someone if I feel that they will enjoy and use it.

I would regift if I could not use the item but would tell the one receiving the item how I came about having it

I don't think there is anything wrong at all with re-gifting.  At the same time, I do think it is screwed to do that if the box was faded like you described.
