I usually figure, it doesn't cost me anything to be civil no matter the circumstance, but people do seem to feel the relative anonymity of the internet means it doesn't matter what they say. There's no face attached to the people they're talking to, so it's easier to say things you probably wouldn't say in person. But then, the people that say stupid things online might well say stupid things in person, too.
