Being from the midwest... this isn't a big deal for me.  But at work - whoa people are all about the kings cakes.  Would someone please explain this to me?  I had never heard of it before until I started working for Kroger.

The King Cake is a tradition for Mardi Gras / Carnival found in many areas around the world. It generally is some type of cake usually with a filling (eg a fruit filling) as well as the "King" trinket. This trinket is usually a figurine of some type... For Christian traditions, the trinket is a plastic or ceramic baby meant to represent Jesus, however the tradition has been expanded to be more secular by having the trinket represent someone famous like Time's Person of the Year (for the previous year). The person that finds the trinket is said to have a year of good luck. They may be called the "King" (or "Queen") for the day giving them additional privileges and / or responsibilities like not having to purchase any drinks for themselves (leaving the King's bill to his friends to pay) but also having to host the Mardi Gras party the next year.

I had a chance to go 25 years ago and ended up not being able to take off work, even though I had vacation coming. it was a bummer to not get to go. But now with so much stuff going on I am not sure  I would want to go now. As I age I get less and less involved in anything like that.

Mardi gras is a blast.  New Orleans...Bourbon St in general is always a party.  My memory of MG is my mom fighting with other people for beads for me...kindof crazy stuff.

Everyone should be in New Orleans for Mardi Gras at least once in their lives. It's truly a one of a kind experience. However, New Orleans is also great year round. If you go there outside of Mardi Gras, you'll get to enjoy a whole other side to the city.

Totally forgot about marid gras, I have never actually been. I might check it out one of these days.
