What Would You Do with an Antique Computer?
« on: February 02, 2016, 04:53:47 pm »
I've been thinking about antiques for a while now. I think old computers look nice, but I think it would be hard to use them for anything we need nowadays. I guess I would like one to bring back memories of computers I used to see in school.

I can't really picture an antique computer, but you could use it as a decorative accent in the living room...a conversation piece, for sure.

I'm still using mine, an old tower with Windows XP on it.

I miss my old computers they were so much easier then the new ones. Or maybe I am just having a hard time adjusting to all of the new stuff that is on them. Maybe so. But by golly I can still do fusion cash which is great.

It depends on how old the computer is... Some of the earliest computers that hit the mass market are now collector pieces, esp. for the "nerds" (like me) that grew up on them. I'm still kicking myself a little for getting rid of my first computer.... I had an IBM PC-Jr with a bunch of games for it. A few years ago I looked on e-Bay to see what it'd be worth, and the computer itself was $500+ depending on its condition. And my original King's Quest for that system with a cartridge (instead of the 5-1/2" floppy made for later releases) could have fetched a few hundred as well!

Similarly many of the old Atari's, Commadores, and Apples found in the 80s homes and classroom are also becoming collector items. Even some of the original gaming systems (like the original Nintendo) can also get a good price from the collectors in geekdom.

I am not sure, maybe look for one of those computer geeks who fix computers, but more then likely I would not just keep it around taking up space, if nothing else I would donate it, I always see these very old computers when i am in thrift stores and sometimes people are buying them, so I guess there is use for them.

I'd probably use it to work offline. Most old computers have some kind of graphic development and word processing capabilities.

I don't think it has any value, so I would throw it away.

you could start your own museum.
It may be worth a lot of money in the future.
Everyone thought Beanie Babies would be a money maker and valuable.
The worth or value of anything matters only to the owner.
Each of us can give something value just by liking it and "seeing" its value.
You see the value of the antique computer.
Another person may just see it as computer parts and not appreciate its value as a whole piece of machinery.

Many collectors look for old computers mainly of their history or parts.... Things like the first Macintosh/Windows computer, old Apple computers (Apple II), etc are sold at relatively high price in places like ebay or auction.. Companies don't make them anymore and collectors want a historic device in their collection...Other than that collectors collect old computers due to the metal that are in computers.. Conductive metals like gold, copper, aluminium, etc are in processor (cpu), ram, heatsinks, motherboard, PCI, connective wiring. Although its relatively SMALL amount of them, collectors get some profit if they found a computer for free and such. Most people don't go the hassle of melting down parts to get the small profit of scrap metal (mostly go through a computer recycling program)... In ebay you will see some people selling pounds of old computer parts for money due to the scrap gold
