How Can I Sleep While Feeling Scared?

It's after midnight where I am now, but I can't sleep because I'm so scared. My uncle is dying of a drinking problem, and it's reminding me of things I saw on TV about alcohol tragedies a long time ago.

I am so sorry to hear about your uncle.  You need to sleep to be strong for him and the rest of your family.

Oh dear, that's a horrible scenario.  I'll be praying for your rest and comfort for your Uncle.  The above contributor is absolutely right though.  Try and rest (even cat-nap) if your mind and body allow at different times of the day.

I am so sorry that you have that feeling.  When I have troubles or am bothered by anything, I turn it over to the Lord in prayer.  Prayer, for me, is very soothing.  I get a feeling of burdens being lifted just by putting them in the hands of the Lord.  It doesn't always take my troubles away, but it does take that dreaded burdened feeling from me.

I don't know if you believe in prayer and it doesn't matter but my point is I will pray for peace and comfort for you and let you know when I having difficulty sleeping due to pain, sorrow or fear I pray until I fall asleep and it seems like it doesn't take long.  Well regardless I hope this difficulty is over for you soon and that one way or another you find peace.

I do believe in prayer. I would never want anybody to say in front of me that he or she doesn't. Saying you don't believe in something that generally sounds respectful would sound rude to me. How could prayer be disrespectful?

Yes, isn't it odd how we always think about what worries us at bed time. I am the same way. I have found it helps to have a little tv on a bed time, whilst I am laying down. It helps to get my mind off worrisome things and helps me to wind down. Then when I am too tired to concentrate on the tv, I am usually tired enough to fall right asleep.

I recommend opening your bible and turning to the book of Psalms.

I work 3pm to 11pm and dont get to bed usually till after 1AM.It is very quiet then and reading Gods word helps take the edge off of our anxiety!

Sadly, my uncle is dead now. It was too late to save him after he drank too much alcohol.

Not sure what you mean by alcohol tragedies.  All you can do is put it out of your mind and go to sleep.  Sitting up worrying is not going to help anything.
