A Book Problem

I just got a new book, and when I tried to remove a separate UPC label, I tore a somewhat small part of the back of the book cover and think I already ruined the book. What can I do about it?

Is it a paperback or hardback?
With a paperback, you can cover it with clear contac paper, which would keep it from any more damage.
I do that with my keepers, so they don't fall apart from reading them over and over.

Contac paper should work then.
Even if you've torn off a big piece, if you line the piece up with the torn edge, you should be able to get it so it covers it.

Well it's no longer in mint condition so I hope it's not a collectible.  I like mass paperbacks to read in bed and get some from the free exchange bin at the library, but they can get rather beat up so I usually repair them with transparent tape.

You could also use cold lamination sheets from the office supply section or store.

I like the advice about repairing damage of a book, but saying something you don't own is not in mint condition sounds rude to me. It's like saying somebody now looks ugly just because he or she got a big scar on his or her face.

I guess I don't understand why a small tear in the cover would bother someone so much.  Isn't it the contents that's important?

Unless the book was valuable I wouldn't worry about it.

As long as you're not planning to sell the book in the future....

does it really matter whether or not you repair it?

If you decide to sell it in the near future...

you can offer someone else a bargain by disclosing the fact that the cover is slightly damaged.

The book is fine. I just made a common but small mistake.

       Take the book back to the store-in person or by mail. Tell them it is damaged...and you want a replacement. It is that simple!

    And next time do not remove any stickers!

you can still read the book but to sell to a collector you definitely would not get top dollar.
