Pistorius Trial

From what I understand, Pistorius is a double amputee who is being charged with first degree murder in the shooting death of his girlfriend.  What I don't get is why he felt compelled to shoot.  If he and his girlfriend are the only people in the apartment, why he didn't pay attention to the fact that she was not in the bedroom?  Why is it that he shot at the bathroom door amid her screams for help?  I think that he obviously cared about the woman because the trial has taken on an emotional tone.  Locking him up for life will not bring her back, and the memory that he killed her will haunt him for the rest of his life.  Personally, I believe he will be tortured for the rest of his days because of what happened.
