I prefer homemade but will never bypass a slice of Eli's or Cheesecake Factory cheesecake.

Many people consider making a cake from a mix to be homemade or scratch baking, since you still  have to make it yourself.  I think that it depends on the recipe, as to which would be better.  I found a recipe that you start with a cake mix, but add extra flour, sugar, eggs, flavorings and so on to make a larger richer cake.  It's the best of both.

I rarely bake a cake from a recipe.  I prefer Duncan Hines mixes, as they taste really good and not as artificial as some of the other brands.  I do like all brands, but I think that DH is the best.

I prefer homemade cakes, but don't have the time to make homemade cakes often, however, around holidays I love to bake.
