McAfee Security System
« on: April 16, 2013, 05:25:05 am »
I purchased my laptop in July 2011.  I had the McAfee Security system installed to protect it from viruses.  It was for naught.  I had to constantly take it back to Office Depot, where I bought it, for technical support.

I took it to Office Depot for tech support because it would not connect to the Internet on Tuesday, April 9.  The tech who worked on it could not connect to the Internet either unless it was in safe mode.  He referred me to take it to another place.  I told the tech at that place that I had a two-year installation of McAfee on my laptop.  He told me that people have had problems with McAfee and we discussed how many problems I had been experiencing.  When he took the McAfee off, it opened up.  He called me on Saturday to inform me that he found 117 virus-related problems on my laptop.  The McAfee system was supposed to protect it from these viruses.

I told him to take the viruses off.  I am posting this to my Fusion Cash family to let them know if they are having  any problems after having McAfee installed, it could be the reason. 8) :o ??? :'(

I have never really liked it and I hate the fact that it has come installed on every darn computer I ever bought.  Nothing will keep you 100% virus free, but I have been pretty safe using Avast Free version.

Some of the problems I experienced while McAfee was on my laptop were that it reported after a scan that it was good; when I checked the status, everything was good except the security, which was reported as fair.  My laptop did not connect to my wireless adapter, so, on April 4, I connected a Ethernet cable to my satellite system and my laptop.  I got connected to the Internet for all of 2 days (April 4 & 5).  After that, it disconnected itself again, forcing me to have to take it in once again.  On the first anniversary of having my laptop, my McAfee expired.  expired.  I bought a second laptop and installed McAfee on it.  I would receive mixed messages that my system was at risk and then it would tell me my system was secure.  Sad to say,  I hadn't had it 7 months and it just died.

It has caused me headaches and I am at a point to say, "Stick a fork in me; I am done." ???

McAfee USED to be one of the best anti-virus products out there.  I was using it back in the '90's and then something changed.  Their forums were very helpful (at one time) but, when MANY people started running in to problems, the admins there weren't replying anymore.  I used to pay good money for McAfee and after all the headaches I got trying to get answers and trying to get my money back, I dropped it and never looked back.  Now, I refuse to pay for anything that will do the same job a FREE anti-virus program will do.  Of course, you have to have some common sense and not visit suspect websites (and watch or BLOCK websites your kiddies might get in to).  I've been using AVAST! for years now and I am very happy with the job it does, and yes, it's FREE.

McAfee is not an antivirus that has a high protection rate as other antivirus' in the market... I don't really trust any computer brand recommendation or pre-installed trial version of antivirus (Like Norton and McAfee) becuase it's resource heavy, misses a lot of malware, and also a pain to uninstall and install a new antivirus...

For freeware antivirus try looking at Avast or AVG

For paid antivirus it's Kaspersky or Bitdefender

I’m sorry to hear you have to go through this. From the very beginning when I first bought my laptop 6-7 years ago, it also came with McAfee. I never liked it. Before I consider using internet with my laptop, I went out and bought and installed Norton Antivirus software. After a good 3 years, I finally got rid of Norton because I got a few viruses leaked into my laptop. To me it’s not worth paying for annual renewal if it’s not doing a good job of protecting my laptop from viruses.  Now I am using Rising Antivirus which doesn’t cost me a dime and is free to use. So far I’m happy with it.  :)
