Nicotine?

Is nicotine generated from tobacco or is it generated through the process of harvesting, treatment etc. of the tobacco.  I really want to know the answer as my son and I are in a debate over this.  I say it is natural to tobacco and he says it comes from the processing of tobacco.  Which is it?
