why do stores start things so early

To make more money. The earlier they put that stuff out the longer you'll be thinking about it and probably be spending money on it.

  Easter is also early this year.  It is in March, so it is not as early or far away as you think.

talking about holidays earlier gives stores a theme for them to decorate stores......corporate offices think if you start pushing holiday-themed stuff in front of customers, they'll be convinced into buying stuff you weren't really planning to buy, even after you pass over that stuff the first few visits.
