Spitting in baseball???

I cannot understand why it is mandatory for baseball players and their coaches to be constantly spitting stuff (chewing tobacco, sunflower pips, etc)! It really grosses me out! I don't see athletes spitting and gobbing in other sports like cycling, running, football, soccer, cricket, etc. Is this an American thing?
