If your looking for a desktop, I would suggest a Hp or Dell. They both seem to be running good deals. If you don't need any auxillary equipment (keyboard, mouse, Monitor) you should be able to pick something up for under $400. Like you said, shop around, some places may have incentives or rebates.

Bummer!  I had ten computers at one time and backed up each and every one of them religiously...except the one that I used the most!  That's right...the one with all of my music, pictures, business files crashed one day before I received notice that I was getting a state audit on five files locked on my crashed hard drive!  I spent ninety six hours straight, talking to the microsoft staff in India, during Ramada and managed to retrieve about seventy five percent of my hard drive.  I still haven't learned my lesson...I use this computer constantly and have yet to back it up.  It has a major virus that I will have to get rid of with the help of a computer guru friend the next time  we get together.

My question would be....was it a DELL?    I have had 2 Dell computers that both crashed and neither one did I have backup on so lost everything.  I tell myself my next computer will NOT be a dell....

I hate it when that happens, it always seems to crash at a time when you need it most.  :BangHead:

When you buy it, don't forget to use either the FC Mall to get an extra rebate back....or sign up for an Ebates account and use whomever is advertising the higher rebate.  I like to leverage all my options to get the best rebate back, but I found many people forget to use these tools when purchasing (especially larger dollar items).

I've had good luck with both Dell and HP.  I've also heard Lenovo and Sony Vio are not too bad either.  I looked into Toshiba a bit, but found the quality ones were a little too pricy for what you get.

Sorry about your computer crashing.  I'm not the type to buy a "pre-made" computer like Dell or HP.  They put WAY too much crap on your hard drive and basically take it over.  I would much rather put my own computer together.  At least I know I'm getting EVERYTHING I want, minus the manufacturer's list of junk they fill your hard drive with.  I've been working on the one I put together over 10 years ago and it's still going strong.

Currently using Toshiba and has worked well.  Had a Dell for many many years.  Gateway lasted no time at all.  Wish I had more computer knowledge to repair my own.
