How short is too short?
« on: January 02, 2013, 10:03:46 am »
The forum posting bonus description page says that "contributory" posts are not short, missing content, ...

So, the question I've been running into is: How short to posts have to be to qualify as "short"?  It seems like I have had some of my posts automatically thrown out because they were too short, so is there a particular character or word limit?
I'm sorry if my recondite verbiage is a little difficult to understand sometimes.  Using fancy vocabulary really is fun, you should try it!

Usually when you make some posts in the forums, they usually want you to write at least 2 or 3 sentences per post. I've been doing this since I first joined and write as much as I can. It can be a one short paragraph and they will still accept your post. But your post does not happen have to be a long paragraph to get accepted, it can be one shore paragraph for a minimum of 2 to 3 sentences. Be sure make at least 30 posts in a single month before you submit your posts for the $3 forum bonus.

Your post needs to contribute something to the conversation and whether it does or not is determined by a human being.  That's why it take a couple of months for the bonus to be paid.  I don't believe there's any set standard for size but it must be thoughtful and expressed in more than a single word.  Something like 'I agree' or 'me too' doesn't really carry a conversation forward so it wouldn't qualify without additional information.  If a single sentence adds to the conversation, it's sufficient or you could write 2 or more sentences that make no sense (we've all seen those) and not get credit.

I do not know if there is a required minimum amount of words or characters to qualify for a contributory post. I know that something like "me too, wow, way to go" probably will not qualify all by themselves. I would suggest complete sentences, good grammar, spelling and punctuation. Try for at least two sentences, if not three. However, I know that sometimes a question can be asked or replied to in just one good sentence.

Happy New Year.

I agree with kay7 and BostonPhil, it's not about quantity of your words, but the quality of them. Contributory basically means "contributing" so all your posts should just be trying to bring something to the conversation, no matter how many words you can express that in

I tend to be pretty brief in my posts but I don't believe I have ever had a post disqualified. I think it is the content rather than the quantity that determines it. I also try to make more than 30 posts in a month just in case.

The first time, i liked to joint "word chain games", then I noticed it was only one which is credited. Then I stopped.

After that, i contribute in a "more qualify" post. Once or twice still not eligible, eventho i tho my post is "good enough".
That's ok for me, contributing in this forum is valuable enough for me.

I think that they just require quality posts. I mean writing posts that are a couple of characters long may not be sufficient. But I don't think that it is necessary to write paragraph after paragraph either. It should be thoughtful and meaningful.
