people who want to write books for money and fame
« on: September 18, 2012, 07:57:16 pm »
These people are obviously not real writers. They don't love what they do they just want to make money, and most wont make anything because it will reflect in their writing. Just not something to get into for money.

Not really understanding your statement. I would think anyone who is serious about writing is hoping to one day be famous and ofcourse have a bestseller. I don't think this makes a person not enjoy what they are doing if it is their passion. Obviously if you are not a good writer you won't make it to the next level of an offer for publishing your manuscript.

I agree with laine39 that doing something for money / fame doesn't mean that the person can't have a true passion for what they do. I'd argue that if you have a passion / talent for something, you should expect to be paid; getting money for doing something is just a reward for something well done. When I was looking around for a graduate school, my college professors said that the schools will pay fellowships to students for their research work, and if you cannot find a grad. school that is willing to offer you some type of stipend, then you should really reconsider going into that field. A grad. school not paying the student is telling the student that they do not have the ability to do well in that field (ie low grades, scores, etc.). (BTW, this was for natural sciences... I have some friends in different fields, like history or literature, and they operate differently). And actually, both money and fame are a measure of a person's worth to that particular field. If you don't do something well, you won't make money or achieve fame from doing it. Now there may be some "bad apples" that try to cheat the system just to make a quick buck... They may see that vampire novels are big now, so will write some worthless vampire novel just hoping to lure enough readers to make some money. But you'll see that in any field. There are good doctors that really enjoy helping people, and then there are doctors that are good at taking tests so got their MD to make money and not really to help those in need. But usually those people won't achieve great money or fame. Their apathy will shine through and people will eventually ignore the person.

I think anyone who wants to be a writer or is a writer wants to get paid for it. I know I do. I don't care about fame, just making a living at it. The people whose goal is fame are the ones who will do anything to get on TV, especially on a reality show. Some of those people might be famous, but they are not worthy of respect in my view.

It depends on what you are talking about.  Some folks find it quite lucrative to write articles for $$. Say, about travels or restaurants, etc.  Novelist must write for the creative key to their lives and hope that they will make some money along the way.  Kind of like playing the lottery. Many will enter, few will win.
