Do you think America is fair when they cover Olympics?
« on: August 07, 2012, 12:42:56 pm »
The news reporters have been talking about Gabby Douglas who won two gold metals for our country.  Should we encourage our youth when they do good.  She is only 16.  Is there are problem with adults today?

16 yo with 2 gold medals must be so talented, special. we can encourage our kids but not force them. If they got the talent it will find the way. IMHO.

Yes, they should be very proud they won for the USA.  United States shows that we a a messed up nation and not great when it comes to how we treat one another.  I watch the other countries how they embrace each other.  It is just very different.  They make you feel like they love each other from the heart.  America always reporting someones pain and it helps when some reporters write positive stories.

What's not fair is the 9000 dollar tax bill, she will get for winning  each of those gold medals!

What's not fair is the 9000 dollar tax bill, she will get for winning  each of those gold medals!

She gets 25,000 in INCOME for Each Gold Medal. That INCOME is taxed.  She'll be fine. It's estimated that she will get about 90 million in endorsements. How is being taxed on your income not fair? Because Rush Limbaugh said so on the radio?

Also if someone ONLY makes the 25,000 form a gold medal they will likely pay only 3,300 in taxes.

The Americans do the same as any other country does that is covering the Olympics. Those kids work hard to be in the Olympic. We should be proud of them.

Actually, she is taxed on the value of the medals, because they are considered unearned.  Same as if you would pay taxes if you won something valuable, like an iPad.  She will be taxed at least $9,000 for the value of the medals and the income.  Of course if good records are kept, every expense should be deducted against the income.  That's what any good accountant would do.

I think our coverage is both fair and inspiring.  Our US media covers American athletes in a bias way the same as any other country has a bias towards their particular athletes--that's to be expected.  I think the attention to individual athletes could be evened out a bit, but let's face it: winners get more coverage.  However, I think that the coverage has led to excitement and pride among our youth... THAT is definitely a good thing... :notworthy:
