I thought that direct deposit is optional and you can get a check

This message appeared in error for some users.  It has been fixed and you are, of course, still eligible to receive payment by whatever method you set.

It will continue to say Pending for a while so don't worry.  I believe it says that until the payment is sent, i.e. check in mail, Paypal sent, etc.

No, a Direct Deposit is an electronic funds transfer deposited directly into an account.  A paper check muct be manually deposited.
One can lead a horse to water however, if one holds the horse's head under, that horse will drown.

There is the 'indirect deposit' option.

There is the 'indirect deposit' option.

The 'indirect withdrawl' option may appeal to some as well.
