Dangerous to stop smoking...???

So my friend smokes about a pack a day and I was telling her to quit when I heard its dangerous to stop smoking when u smoke that much? Is that true? This guy told me that he knew someone who smoked for 30 years healthy and when he stopped got cancer im like well probably from smoking 30 years!!! Anybody have any opinions on this....
