Fatal car accidents
« on: January 27, 2012, 08:30:14 am »
Most car accidents are do to some type of distracted driving.

Have restrictive laws actually cause the rate of fatal car accidents to go down in the year of 2011 from the rates was in 2010?
If so what laws?

Ignorance and indifference has made fatal car accidents rise. When I am on the road, I am thinking about the law, but I am also thinking about the fact that I want to come home to my family at the end of the day.....ALIVE! Also, others around me who are just as dilligent on the road also want make it home to their loved ones.
People who take unecessary risks on the road really don't value their lives or the lives of others very much, they have nothing to go home to, I guess.

Texting while driving is obviously a danger, but they haven't tried to outlaw eating while driving, doing makeup while driving, etc... So until they outlaw those things as well people will continue to do stupid stuff when they drive.

I believe my state enforced a new driving law last year about texing and drivving so I am hoping that the numbers from last year go down for this cause.

they put these distractive driving laws in place but unless you are in an accident you are unlikely to be cited for this.
so many people drive distracted..... it's scary and I think more people will die before something serious is done

I worked in accident investigation for the California Highway Patrol, it is amazing how often the  distracted drivers went right on down the road, with devastation in their wake.  Someone trying to avoid their sudden and unexpected  lane changes, or their varying speeds gets caught in a tangle with other vehicles.   One of the most common causes of accidents, and least talked about is not driving distracted or under the influence, but of driving while too tired, and falling asleep at the wheel .    Falling asleep usually will cause lane changes and  accelerated speed with no control whatsoever.  A lot of the very small cars that get such good mileage, we call "Coffin Cars", because the slightest tap and they are totaled with you in them, while the SUV just has to polish his bumper.  The very worse accidents are when there is fire involved.  The worse accidents as far as  notifications are School Bus accidents....99 times out of 100 there are no injuries, but every parent wants to know about their child NOW!! Which is totally understandable, but not possible with 40 to 60 people on the bus.

I used to be an Insurance Liability adjuster, my filed was wide. I also had to initially investigate the scene, the vehicles, the police accident report, and later, obtain review and report on the medical bills, etc etc. The accident scenes were the worst for me, especially if a fatality was involved.  Yes many sad situations could have been avoided.

This past weekend there were 2 young people DOA in my former hometown, Richmond, VA.  They crossed the median while the driver was texting.  The driver of the car they hit was seriously injured.  Several years ago I rear-ended a car while trying to retrieve a CD from the floor.  It took only a split second.  My car was totaled, but I was so relieved no one was hurt.  I learned my lesson that morning on my way to work.  It happens every day all over the country.  Anything that causes a distraction should be avoided by drivers, no matter what it is.  You can get away with it for years (which I did) and be in a fatal accident the very next time you drive.  It only takes the blink of an eye.

Unfortunately, some are caused by mechanical failures or lack of proper maintenance...running out of fluids (now-that is a real distraction: Not to take care of your vehicle). When driving, you should concentrate on driving...nothing else!
